Cosmetic Tattoo Precare & Aftercare Guide
Do’s & Don’t leading up to your appointment?
4 Weeks Before Your Appointment:
- Avoid any brow waxing, threading, or tweezing. The more natural hair growth you have, the better we can assess and follow your natural brow pattern during mapping.
-
Refrain from anti-wrinkle injections (e.g., Botox or similar treatments) for at least 4 weeks prior and 2 weeks after your tattooing procedure.
-
If you have never had injectables before, we strongly recommend waiting until after your cosmetic tattoo session to establish your natural facial movement and muscle placement.
2 Weeks Before Your Appointment:
-
Discontinue use of any skin-thinning agents, including (but not limited to):
-
Retinoids (Retin-A, Tretinoin)
-
Vitamin A (topical or oral)
-
AHA/BHA acids (Glycolic, Lactic, Salicylic)
-
Steroids or Cortisone (topical or oral)
-
- Avoid facial treatments such as chemical peels, laser, microdermabrasion, or deep exfoliation.
-
If you are taking prescription acne medications such as Accutane (Isotretinoin), you must wait at least 6 months after finishing the course before booking a cosmetic tattoo procedure.
This treatment cannot be performed while you are on these medications.
7 Days Before Your Appointment:
- Minimise sun exposure. Do not attend your appointment with sunburnt or windburnt skin, as tattooing compromised skin can lead to poor healing and results.
- Avoid the use of fake tan or tanning products on the treatment area. Natural skin tone must be visible to correctly assess pigment colour and undertones.
3 Days Before & After Your Appointment:
-
Stop taking non-essential blood-thinning substances, such as:
-
Aspirin
-
Fish Oil
-
Ibuprofen
-
Niacin
-
Heparin
-
Warfarin
-
-
If you are on prescribed blood thinners, do not stop your medication without medical advice.
-
You must consult with your GP and obtain a signed medical clearance letter stating it is safe for you to undergo a cosmetic tattoo procedure.
-
Without this letter, we are unable to proceed with the treatment.
Care Instructions 24 hours prior to tour appointment:
No alcohol 24 hours prior to your appointment
No Aspirin, Ibuprofen 24 hours prior to your appointment
No caffeine 24 hours prior to your appointment
No strenuous workouts the day of your appointment
No tanning the day of your appointment
Aftercare Instructions
Balm Instructions:
- Use only the balm or ointment provided or recommended by your artist.
- Apply a thin layer with a clean cotton swab.
- Reapply every 2–3 hours or as needed to prevent dryness or cracking.
- Do not over-apply – the skin needs to breathe.
What to Avoid After Your Appointment:
- Always wash and sanitise your hands before touching the treated area. This reduces the risk of introducing bacteria and causing infection.
- Avoid soaking the treated area. Light showers are fine, but:
- Do not let the tattooed area be under direct shower spray.
- Do not allow water to sit or soak on the area.
- No rubbing, scratching, picking, or peeling. Let the skin naturally flake off. Interfering can pull pigment and create patchy results or scarring.
- Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds. UV rays can fade pigment. Once healed, always apply SPF 30+.
- No heavy sweating, workouts, or hot environments (e.g., saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, pools, or baths) for at least 10–14 days.
- Avoid makeup, cleansers, oils, serums, creams, exfoliants, or skincare products on or near the treated area until fully healed.
- Do not use any products containing: Retinol or Retin-A, AHA/BHA acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic), Vitamin C serums, Fragrance or essential oils (Avoid these for at least 30 days around the tattooed area.)
- Do not sleep on your face or the treated area. Use a clean pillowcase and try to sleep on your back.
- Laser or light-based treatments (including facials and IPL) can distort pigment. Avoid the area during such treatments or inform your technician you have a cosmetic tattoo.
- Avoid touching the area unnecessarily throughout the day.
Brow Tattoo Care: (Microblading, Ombre, or Combination Brows)
- Brows will appear darker and more defined immediately after treatment – this is temporary.
- Avoid water, sweating, or makeup near the brows for at least 10 days.
- Do not tint, wax, thread, tweeze, or bleach brows during the healing process.
- Avoid facials or steam near the face for 2 weeks.
- Brows will begin to flake around Day 4-6. Do not pick or scratch.
- No brow pencil or powder until the area is fully healed.
- Colour will appear softer after flaking. Final results show in 4-6 weeks.
Eyeliner Tattoo Care (Coming Soon):
- Eyes may be puffy or slightly red immediately after. Apply a cold compress gently (wrapped in a clean cloth).
- No eye makeup, mascara, lash serums, or eyeliner until fully healed (approx. 10-14 days).
- Do not rub or touch your eyes, even if itchy or crusting.
- Avoid eye creams, cleansers, micellar water, or makeup removers near the area.
- Do not use contact lenses for at least 48 hours post-treatment.
- Avoid sweating, steam, and heat. Sleep slightly elevated to reduce puffiness.
- Do not get lashes wet for the first 7-10 days. Wash around the eyes very gently.
- Flaking or light crusting is normal, do not pull or pick.
- Healed liner will soften in appearance over the following weeks.
Lip Blush Tattoo Care:
- Lips may be slightly swollen or tender for the first 1-2 days.
- Use a straw to drink; avoid hot, spicy, salty, or acidic food for 48 hours.
- Reapply healing balm frequently to avoid dryness.
- Avoid kissing, licking, or biting your lips during the healing phase.
- Do not use lipstick, gloss, or unapproved balms.
- Flaking will occur-do not peel or scrub. Final colour settles over 4-6 weeks.
What to expect during the healing process?
Immediately after:
Immediately following your procedure, the tattooed area will appear bolder, brighter, and more sharply defined than expected. This is completely normal. The pigment will appear more intense in the beginning due to oxidation and the natural healing response.
The area may feel like a mild sunburn – slightly warm, tight, or tender – but redness and discomfort should be minimal. Some swelling may occur, especially around delicate areas like the lips or eyes, and generally subsides within 24-48 hours.
Healing is a process. Your cosmetic tattoo will go through several phases before the final result settles in. Below is a general guideline of what to expect:
Healing Timeline & Colour Evolution:
Day 1
-
Area appears freshly tattooed – bold, crisp, and more intense in colour than expected
-
Mild redness and swelling may be present – especially around sensitive areas like lips or eyes
-
The skin may feel tight or slightly warm – similar to a sunburn
-
Colour appears darker due to oxidation – this will soften during healing
Days 2–4
-
A thin, light protective layer forms – this is the body’s natural response to healing
-
Pigment may look more filled in or darker – this is temporary
-
Skin may feel tight, dry, or slightly sensitive
-
Do not pick, rub, or scratch – this can pull pigment or cause uneven healing
Days 5–6
-
Flaking begins – small, thin flakes may shed like dry skin
-
Treated area may look lighter underneath – the skin is new and still healing
-
Some patchiness or unevenness may appear – do not panic
-
Continue following your aftercare routine as advised
Days 7–10
-
Shedding continues – most flaking is completed by Day 10
-
Colour may appear very light, patchy, or uneven – this is normal
-
Skin is still regenerating underneath – pigment will resurface slowly
-
Do not apply makeup, tint, or exfoliate the area yet
Weeks 2–3
-
Skin looks smoother – flaking has stopped and surface healing is mostly complete
-
Colour may still appear soft, dull, or faded – this is part of the settling process
-
Some areas may heal quicker than others – results can look inconsistent at this stage
-
Avoid judging the final outcome too early
Weeks 3–4
-
Colour starts to resurface – becoming warmer, richer, and more even
-
Pigment softens and integrates with your skin tone – this is when results look more natural
-
Shape and definition settle – the tattoo begins to take on its final appearance
-
Continue protecting the area from sun and skincare actives
Weeks 4–8
-
Final results are visible – the tattoo has fully healed beneath the surface
-
Pigment shows true colour and tone – any light or uneven areas will now be clearly visible
-
Your follow-up session can now be booked – this is where we fine-tune shape, depth, and pigment
-
For most clients, 2 sessions are sufficient – around 10% may benefit from a 3rd perfecting session
Important Notes:
-
The treated area will shrink slightly during healing – this is expected.
-
Cosmetic tattoos typically lighten by up to 50% during the healing process.
-
The skin’s natural exfoliation plays a big role in how colour settles.
-
Do not panic if the colour looks light or uneven in the first month – this is part of the process.
Your Follow-Up Appointment
Cosmetic tattooing is a two-step process.
Your second session (6–8 weeks after the initial treatment) is essential for:
-
Perfecting shape and symmetry
-
Touching up any light or patchy areas
-
Assessing pigment retention and how your skin responded
-
Adjusting tone or layering in depth, if needed
Your pigment blend is carefully recorded so we can make any changes if needed. For most clients, two sessions are sufficient. However, approximately 10% of clients may require a third appointment depending on skin type, colour choosen, retention, or desired depth.
Technique Meets Transformation
From natural-looking brows to defined eyes and lips, these before-and-after moments show how thoughtful cosmetic tattooing enhances your features – not changes them.
Every transformation is created to flatter your natural features while achieving lasting definition and balance.
